After the massive success of the Easter Sunday Bump N Hustle with Defected Records Simon Dunmore, the Hold Tight boys are chuffed to be invited back to the Disco Boogie Edit Room to do it all over again. Headlining the next event, it’s none other than Grant Nelson, also known as the Godfather of UK Garage, a legendary producer and remixer with tons of output since the early 90s, he is a revered name throughout the global scene who is still going strong and spreading the Garage and House gospel. His Bumping House sound is inextricably woven into UK dancefloor culture via his phenomenal Nice N Ripe Label and many Remix releases throughout the past 20 years. Just over 24 hours ago, he was tearing it up at the Southport Weekender, holding court in the Suncebeat Dome and absolutely smashing it….superb that at the end of this month, he’ll be doing the same for Bump N Hustle at Bar So.
Another little known fact is Mr Nelson via his many mid 90s productions single-handedly converted me (Chris Hold Tight) from Pumping House and Techno into the sweet sounds of USA and UK House and Garage…anyhow, back to the topic in hand!
It’s just a few weeks until the event, so in the meantime, reckon it’s time to pick out five favourite Grant Nelson tracks from years gone by, have a read, have any been missed? Agree with the selection?…Here goes!
- 24 Hour Experience – Part Two – More Dub Essentials – ‘Together’ – Nice N Ripe – 1994
Wow, what a track, this 4-track EP set the standard for the nascent UK Garage scene, ‘Together’ is my favourite track, can still fill a floor on the dancefloor of today, trademark skippy beats, and when that bassline first drops, UK Garage history right there!
- Nice N Ruff EP – ‘In My Soul (Dubbed Out Mix)’ – Nice N Ripe – 1995
Plundering the Nice N Ripe vault once again, if there was a track that completed the Techno to Garage/House conversion I spoke of earlier, it’s this track, I never get tired of it! The stripped down female vocal kicks off the track, then punctuated by synth stabs, the vocal extends….then the bassline, superb!
- 24 Hour Experience – The Test Press EP – Jazz From The Heart (Old Skool Re-edit) – Nice N Ripe – 1995
Another Nice N Ripe anthem (we are seeing a trend here!), if track two converted me to this genre, this track made sure I didn’t stray, trademark beats, the space shuttle-esque countdown slamming straight into a bassline that can’t help to make you shuffle, followed swiftly by the loop from Norman Connors ‘Mother of the Future’, which lifts this track to another level compounded by a fierce breakbeat. You can play it now, the dancefloor still gets it and will always get it, killer track
- Indo – R U Sleeping (Grant Nelson Mix) – Azuli – 1995
Jumping from Nice N Ripe straight on to the legendary London label Azuli, this brings back a ton of memories, the vocal, so, so uplifting, ‘R U sleeping R U sleeping, you better wake up, you better wake up boy’, enter stage left the hallmark of a Grant Nelson remix…the catchy chords, superb, takes me right back!
- Grant Nelson – Spellbound – Boss Records – 2007
Fast forward 12 years, the sound has changed, the slick production remains, tight beats, smooth bassline, a plethora of piano lines swimming in and out of the percussion, the good thing about this track, is it doesn’t sound dated and can absolutely hold its own on the dancefloor of today, NICE!
Right, there you have it, five top notch Grant Nelson tracks, if you’ve heard something new, you should definitely dig deeper, the above is barely scratching the surface, if you’ve heard these before, I hope it’s triggered some dancefloor memories, and whilst I’ve got your attention, have a read of some Bump N Hustle event info, bring it on and see you on the Dancefloor!
